My name is Wanda Ware Cobbs. I have been researching the Vickers family from Dekalb Co., TN. My great-grandmother was Sarah Elizabeth Vickers, daughter of Mary A. Vickers and Granddaughter of Hardin Vickers. Mary A. Vickers never stated who was the father of her children. As far as I know Sarah Elizabeth never stated who her father was. William Vickers was a Private in Co. A, 5th Regiment of the Tennessee Calvary. His company was under the command of Captain Joseph Blackburn.

Captain Blackburn stated "On Dec 18 1863, William was sent out with a scounting party and while in the line of duty he was killed by Guerilla fire at Mine Lick."

DEED of HARDEN C. VICKERS

Hard Vickers

This indenture made this six day of August in the

Year of our Lord one thousand Eight Hundred and

Fifty by and between John Merritte of the county

of Smith and State of Tennessee of the one part and

Hardin Vickar of the county of Dekalb and State

Afore said of the other part. Witness that the said John Meritte

For and in consideration of the sum of one hundred dollars

To him in hand will and truly paid the receipt whereof he

Acknowledge, hath granted bargained and sold and by witness

Presently doth grant bargain and sell unto the said Hardin

Vickas his heirs and assignees a certain track or parcel of land

Curtainly being and lying in the county of Dekalb on the

Caney Fork River and adjoins lower with the said (John)

Meritte on the west and John Foster on the north. Pirtymon Jones

on the east lying and coming on a pine oak on the said Fosters

line. The corner of the said Jones thence west with said Fosters

line 71 poles to a bush the said Foster S. W. corner. Thence south

with said Foster line to a black locust tree. S?? (toil) Fosters S.E

corner thence west with said (toil) line to dogwood on the QI,

Toil line thence south a conditional line made between the

said Meritte and Vickas to the river to a slippery elm. Thence up

the river with the same to a water oak the said Jones corner

thence north with a conditional line made between the said

Vickas and Jones to a beach below the said Vickars Spring. Thence

Down the branch east still with the conditional line to a beach

Thence north with the conditional line to the beginning by estimation

hereditaments and appurtenances thereto belong or in any wise

Primeses and every part do prove thereof to have and to hold the said land,

ON THIS 29th day of December A.D. 1888, personally appreared before me

Hardin Vickers in and for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths,

aged 68 years, a resident of (blank)

in the County of Dekolh and State of Tennessee whose Post Office address is Smithville

well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows:

I was at Nashville Tenn where said Lee was discharged about July or Aug 1865

& I brought him home in my wagon on our way home he suffered and complained

with pains all over him he seemed to bea sufferring very much he looked

very yellow and swolen and was very weak he seemed to bea low in spirits

had nothing to say to any buddys and was very lifeless and I brought him

about the time stated he was not able to travel other than by help I had a

heavy ladr at the time that I bought him home and some of the boys would

get out of the wagon when we came to hills but Mr Lee was not able to wawls? a?

I would have to hall him all ?? ????? my 1st recallectins is that he complained

with the piles and was suffering with his bowels his ???? was very bad

had no stomach for ???? and he was bloated

and he further declares that he has no interest in said case and that he is not concerned in

its prosecution.

Right lobe also enlarged. Skin sallow, conjunctive lateric. Feet & legs dedematious. I think abecess in in left lobe of liver and cause may hve originated when first affected in Army.

On Oct 12, 1897 a special Examiner was appointed to investigate the allegations of adultery in regards to act passed in the 1880's which said if a woman was found guilty of adultery and/or co habitation while receiving a widow's pension, she could forfeit said pension.

No actual evidence found and Mary continued to get pension payments until her death in 1931.

IN MEMMORIAM

Mrs. S. R. Vickers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Bluhm who lived at Blughmtown, DeKalb County, was born November 22, 1889 and departed this life December 24, 1911. She leaves a mother and father, five brothers and sisters two children and husband and a host of friends to mourn her death. She has been very low sience the first of August with lung trouble, caused by measles settling on her lungs. Her Husband, relatives and friends were all very devoted to her during her sickness. Until just a few days before she died had hopes of getting well. She loved her children with that pure, noble love of a mother.

Just in bloom of womanhood she wanted to live for her children, but when she came to face death as her portion she kissed her children good by and said I do not fear death for I have lived a christian life.

She was buried in the Vickers graveyard, services being conducted by her pastor. She was a member of the Methodist Church while her husband is a Baptist. She loved the Church, was very devoted to it and her friends, and all loved her. We are very sorry that she had to leave her husband and little children, who had just learned to say mother, but we feel proud of her hope for heaven and for the life she lived. It is not how people die, but how have they lived.

While we hear her voice no more at home, while the little angel-like children so often ask "Where has mother gone," grandmother can look down through the tears of grief and say, "She has gone to Jesus, whom she loved and served in this life." The little children have a home, but no mother to love. Let her friends and relatives turn their little feet in the way that leads up to mother and heaven. It is very natural to grieve after our friends and relatives, yet as they must go. Let's turn now to the living, that we may all prepare to meet death. Prepare as did this Christian woman.

Let us now stop to meditate as to the life men ought to live. Oh, the meditation at the grave! The blood runs cold in our veins as we stand by the grave of those we love. Then it is we call up in long review the whole of virtue and gentleness and the thousand inducements lavished upon us almost unheeded in the daily intercourse of intimacy. Then it is that we swell upon the tenderness of the parting scene, the dread of death with all its stifled griefs, the last testimonies of the expiring love, the last fond look of the closing eye turning upon us from the threshold of existence; the faint, faltering accents, struggling in death to give one more assurance of affection. But, alas, there is no communication between the dead and the living. We quietly lower the casket, fill the grave, mark the place, go home and can only say: Out yonder in the shadow of the weeping pine, beneath the beautiful plumage planted by the soft white hands of health and beauty, sleeps mother's child. There's where human sympathy floated in on an ocean of tears. There is where nature played its part and grave decay it bidding the world farewell. Over the innocent one's grave the litttle birds are singing the evening farewell and bidding the mourning welcome, while the mother, on the eternal shore, is watching for us. We must not go without her children.

Mr. Harrison Mosier, aged 69 years, died at his home south of town on Thursday of last week after being ill some time.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church at Cross Roads Friday, conducted by Rev. R. L. Whitlock and burial was in Keith cemetery.

Mr. Mosier is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Sam Bryant and Mrs. Levert Hubbard; a son, Bob Mosier; two sisters, Mrs. Mat Snow of Texas and Mrs. Jess Vickers of Smithville; one brother, Tom Mosier of Nashville.

He was a good citizen and the family has many relatives and friends who join them in sorrow because of his death.

Mrs. Maggie Mosier Bryant, aged 61 years, 5 months and 1() days, widow of the late Sam Bryant of Smithville, died on Monday of this week in the Good Samaritan hospital at Woodbury.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Whorton Springs Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. H. F. Blankenship, Methodist minister, of which church she had long been a faithful and devoted member.

Survivors are ten children, Mrs. Lola Cantrell, Mrs. Fer Freeman, Mrs. Roy Frazier, Mrs. Willie Bryant, Mrs. Robert Moss, Frank, Matt and Lorene Bryant of Smithville, Sam Bryant and Miss Maggie Bryant of Washington, D. C.; two sisters, Mrs. Estelle Hubbard, Smithville, and Mrs. Alice Brien of Cleveland, Tenn.; two brothers, Flem Howell and Bob Mosier of Smithville.

Mrs. Sam Bryant, Sr., of Smithville, died at the Good Samaritan Hospital early Monday morning. Mrs. Bryant had pneumonia and other complications, and has been a great suffferer for several months. Her children did all that loving, devoted children could do. They were with her constantly, and had the very best medical attention. But the Grim Reaper Death had marked her for his own, and nothing could stay his hand. She leaves seven daughters and three sons, and many other relatives and friends. She was a wonderful woman, full of love and good works. This world is poorer and sadader for her going, but Heaven is richer and brighter.

October 5, 1939--MR. SAM BRYANT IS DEAD

Mr. Sam Bryant, 73 years of age, died at his home here late Tuesday afternoon. He had been in failing health for some time, and suffered a second stroke of paralysis a short while before his death. He was born April 11, 1866, was married July 15, 1894. At the age of 20 he professed religion and lived a useful life.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Geo. M. Davenport and Elder Tom Moore, and burial will be in the Whorton Springs Cemetery. Survivors are his wife and ten children, eighteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Fox Simpson of Birmingham, Ala., and a brother, Mr. Charlie Bryant of Smithville.

Oct. 12, 1939--Mechanicsville

Mr. Sam Bryant, Sr., of Smithville, father of Mrs. Alice Moss, died Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 3. The funeral was at the home Thursday, in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends Elder Tom Moore made a very tender and appropriate talk. The Smithville Methodist choir furnished the music which was beautiful and appropriate. The burial was in Whorton Springs.

Mr. Bryant was a great sufferer for several days before his death, and had been in failing helath for several years. He was a sincere christian, and lived a useful life, and died in the triumphs of faith. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and seven daughters, a number of grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a large number of other relatives and friends. Our entire community extend their deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.

April 16, 1942--AGED CITIZEN SUCCUMBS TO PNEUMONIA

Jesse F. Vickers, son of Harden and Sally Ann Vickers, was born July 31, 1862, and departed this life April 14, 1942, at the age of seventy-nine years.

On March 4, 1886 he was married to Mary Mosier Cantrell, to which union were born five children, four of whom survive him. They are W. H. Vickers of Smithville, Mrs. Charles B. Chester of Anna, Illinois, Mrs. John P. Colvert of Smithvile, and Greeley C. Vickers of Liberty. Mrs. Vickers passed away about four years ago. A daughter, Emma, died at the age of nine months.

Two children by a former marriage of Mrs. Vickers were also reared in this home; Frank C. Crantrell of McMinnville and Mantie Cantrell Frazier, deceased.

Surviving Mr. Vickers in addition to his children are six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and a brother, James P. Vickers of Smithville.

Funeral services were held at the Smithville Baptist Church (of which Mr. Vickers had long been a member) Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Howard P. Colson.

Mrs. James P. Vickers departed from this world January 7, 1942,

at the age of 75 years, 3 months and 3 days. Survivors are

James P. Vickers, husband, and six children-Cyrus of Nashville,

Herbert, Arthur, Floyd, Claud Vickers and Mrs. J. W. Williams of

Smithville; three sisters-Mrs. Loudy Curtis, Mrs. Fannie Neil and

Herman Baptist Church, of which she was a member. Rites were

After John Harding Vickers died his wife, Lucy Ann, sold their

farm and a parcel of land was with held from the transaction

which is the grave of their son (my great grandfather)

For and in consideration of the sum of Eight Hundred Dollars ($800.00) paid and to be paid as follows.

Four Hundred Dollars cash in hand paid and one note for four Hundred Dollars (P 346) due in twelve months. I, L. A. Vickers, have this day bargained and sold and do hereby transfer and convey unto J. L. Lawson and Mary Lawson and their heirs the following described tracts of land situated in the 5th district of Dekalb Co. Tenn. on the waters of Sink Creek and bounded as follows:

Tract No. 1--

Beginning on the North West corner of the tract of land known as the James Tate land (Now owed by Estill Lassiter) running North 37 degree E. 45 poles to a stake near the brick yard. Thence North 42 degree W with the fence 96 poles to the corner of said fence. Thence N. 34 degree E. 14 poles to an old line. Thence with the old line W.134 poles to a black oak with pointers: Thence S. 34 Poles to a black oak and Post Oak: Thence E. 80 Poles to a hickory; Thence S. 154 Poles to a stake. Thence E. 54 poles to a spanish oak in the Tate line thence with his line N. 98 poles to the beginning containing 81 acres and 80 poles.

Tract No. 2.

Beginning on a stake The Tate heirs North West corner (now owed by Estill Lassiter) Thence North 37 degree E. 45 poles to a rock. Vickers and Wards corners near the grave yard. Thence S. 36 poles and 7 link to the Tate line. Thence W. with said line 28 poles to the beginning, containing by estimation three and 11/62 acres more or less (3 11/62 acres). To have and to hold to the said J. L. Lawson and Mary Lawson and heirs (P 347) and assigns forever. I further convenant with the said J. L. Lawson and Mary Lawson that I am lawfully seized of said land have a good right to convey it and that the same is unencumbered and I further covenant and bind myself and heirs and representatives to warrant and forever defend the title to said land to the said J. L. Lawson

and Mary Lawson their heirs and assigns against the lawful claims

of all persons whomsoever. *** From this deed there is excepted a parcel of land

6 ft by 10 ft which is the grave of Jasper Vickers.
