Court of Pleas & Quarer Sessions, Fall Term 1854
“It has been satisfactorily proved in court that the only surviving children and heirs of John Vickers, a Revolutionary soldier who died in Rutherford County, NC and his wife Anne Vickers who died recently in Rutherford County. The names are as follows: Jas. Vickers, William Vickers, Ervin Vickers, Alexander R. Vickers, Elijah N. Vickers, and Mary Hale (Alexander R. Gilkey, Clerk of said Court certify the foregoing is a true copy of the record in my office from under my hand and seal of office this 5th day of Dec. AD 1854,                   R.L. Gilkey, Clerk

[The first child mentioned appears as "Jas." or James. Elijah states in a document below, dated 1855, that his brother John had died. The documents below by brother John are dated 1853. So I assume this is the reason why John is not found in the above list of "surviving" children.]

State of North Carolina, Rutherford County.
On this 29 day of August 1853 personally appeared before the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions open & held for the County of Rutherford, State of North Carolina at the Court House in Rutherford, John Vickers & Benjamin Hale, Administrators, son and son-in-law of Anne Vickers, dec’d widow of John Vickers, dec’d, a soldier of the Revolution, a resident of the County and State aforesaid, aged about 65 years who being first duly sworn according to law, said John Vickers, aforesaid, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the provision of the laws in behalf of Widows of Soldiers of the Revolutionary War, passed July 7th 1838, March 3rd, 1843, June 17th, 1844 and Feby 2nd, 1848. From loss of memory, he will not be able to comply with all the rules prescribed by the President and Sect’y of War the 17th July 1838, He recollects hearing his father say when he entered the service he was a resident out of the County of Wilkes, No. Carolina, that he entered as a volunteer or was drafted for ten months, he personnally heard his father say that after serving his term of ten months, he served a long time, if he mistakes not, he has heard him say that he served during the War a number of years, he thinks he entered the service in the year 1779 was with the American Army in South Carolina at the seige and surrender of Charleston, in the North Carolina Militia, he thinks,--he heard his Father say that he was in verious skirmishes with the British. He knows he often heard him say he was in the battle of Kings Mountain belonging? the Company Commanded by Captain Senior. After his discharge from the Army, he resided in Rowan County where he married the mother of deponent about the year 1787 or 1788, the Bible containing the record was burnt in the house of his sister Margaret which was burnt in this county about the year 1820--if there is any other record in existence of the marriage of his Father John Vickers to his Mother he does not know. His Mothers Maiden name was Anne Ervin. He further states that his Father died the 7th day of May 1829 in the County and State aforesaid aged about 67 years--his mother Anne Vickers survived him and died in this County of Rutherford, No. Ca. the 14th day of May 1853--having never married after her husband died, remaining a widow to the day of her death aged upwards of 90 years. The accompanying letter from the Presbyterian Session of the Church of Bethany in Rowan County, No. Carolina is sent to be filed as testimony that the Session of that Church considered them man & wife--before the year 1790. Other papers are herewith sent of traditionary character, proving the said John Vickers, dec’d to have been a soldier of the Revolution which he desires filed as proof of being a Revolutionary Soldier and the husband of Anne Vickers, dec’d as aforesaid. He further declares that he understood his Father to say that he was a private Soldier of the War only.

JOHN AND ANNE VICKERS OF WILKES AND LATER RUTHERFORD COUNTY, NC

JOHN VICKERS b. ca. 1762 m. 16 Dec 1784 to Anne Ervin in Rowan Co. NC John was a Revolutionary Soldier entering service ca. 1779 from Wilkes Co. NC and seeing action first at the siege and surrender of Charleston and then at the battle of Kings Mountain under Capt. Senior. He discharged to Rowan Co. NC ca. 1787 and removed to Rutherford Co. NC prior to 1800. Anne was daughter of James and Catherine Ervin and was born ca. 1763 in possibly PA (1850 census) . Their known children were:
1. John Jr. b. ca. 1788. John is listed in the 1850 census in Rutherford County, NC, aged 64 as a     Farmer. His wife Jane, age 66 was born in SC. John may have temporarily removed to York Co.     SC with brother William ca. 1821 as implied in a Deed of Conveyance for land located in     Rutherford from John to John Jr. and William Vickers of York Co. A John Vickers (as well as     William Vickers are indicated as numbers 168 and 167 on the 1820 York Co. census, numbers     348 and 350 in 1830, and numbers 323 and 322 in 1840 (along with brother Ervin as number     294). He probably returned to Rutherford prior to 1850 and is listed as a resident of Rutherford     Co. in an 1853 court document. (Compiler does not have Rutherford Co. census data for 1840     or 1850 at this time). He died ca. 1854 in Rutherford. .

WILLIAM VICKERS, son of John Vickers of Rutherford County, North Carolina

!.3. William Vickers b. ca1788 in NC m. ca1824 to Jane S. ______ b. ca1796 in SC. The chronology and descendants of William and Jane are still incomplete. Based on information derived from official sources as well as family lore, the following is the known data for the family of William and Jane. William was born in probably Rowan County, North Carolina circa 1788. He moved to Rutherford County with his father prior to 1800 and may have fought in the War of 1812 (This is being pursued). Sometime prior to 1821 he relocated to York County, South Carolina along with brother John, and possibly Ervin, as evidenced by a deed from John Sr. recorded 25 Dec 1821 in Rutherford County (Book 34 page 149) listing William and John Jr. as residents of York County. A John and William are listed in the 1820 census for York County as neighbors. Further research is needed in York to expand our knowledge of their activities there and to determine who the child and wife listed in the census were. A William is again listed in the 1830 census for York when brother Alexander first appears in Carroll County, South Carolina. He continues residency in York through at least 1841 (birth of his last child Francis) and as late as 1846 when a mortgage was recorded in Rutherford County NC selling his horses, wagons, beds and sundry items to a Joseph Moss. He apparently removed to Carroll County to join brother Alexander soon after this transaction. We pick up William in Tennessee in the 1850 census with Mary as the oldest child in the household. A list provided by Ruth Vickers of Huntington, Tennessee includes a Leroy and his children in the family of William and Jane. This is borne out in the 1860 census when a James L. Vickers appears in Carroll County with the corresponding children. He as well as his first child were both born in South Carolina, along with all the rest of William and Janes' children. It appears that after William departed York for Carroll County, James remained in York until circa 1851, then joined the rest of the family in Tennessee where his second child was born circa 1852. William and Jane apparently passed away prior to the 1870 census.

On February 17, 1865 he was transferred to Company I, the 7th Tennessee Cavalry and mustered out soon after. HEADLEY VICKERS

The following story was related in a letter by Adrian (Vickers) Furr to her sister Endama (Vickers) Easley in 1973. Not much has been found concerning Headley Vickers (1.4.1.), but the name, circumstances, and age fits for "our" Headley, the grandson of Alexander and great nephew of William. Quoted as written, meet Headley Vickers:

"In the notes I made for you concerning family history and events as I remember them I know that I noted that Daddy had a cousin (I don't know how far removed) named Headley Vickers--But did I relate the part that to me is comical--that is that he was a "professional Hobo"--That was what he termed himself--Guess he was a bit ahead of his time because now I guess he would be called a "Hippie"-- I can remember him well because of the circumstances being so unusual--the family were embarrassed but still found his infrequent visits most interesting--He was always clean & neat and in conventional dress but loved to live the life of a Gypsy-- He was a itenerant photographer and a fairly good one I imagine as the few photographs I remember were not at all bad--He made the one of you on a post card with you sitting in a rocker and with a striped wool blanket draped over the back of the chair for back ground effect. I think you probably have the picture--I don't and I think there was only one print--but you were a small child--less than a year old I would guess. He apparently had some sort of income--faintly I seem to remember it was a Spanish- American War pension. He had what then was good photographic equipment a large "graflex" camera and did his own developing and printing of photography and so far as I ever heard did not do that to earn money but because he liked it--no one ever heard of him being in trouble with the "law"--He just loved to travel and "ride the Rails," camp out with other hobos, make coffee in tin cans over camp fires & heat beans & such in the same manner--He did not beg or ever ask to "borrow" money--for months no one would have any idea where he was then he would show up for a visit and his tales would facinate me--I dont know the end of the story--he wasn't a young man and so far as I recall never came to see us after we moved to Miss of for some time before that-- Thought if I hadn't brought all this out I had failed to relate a bit of the unconvential colorque Vickers "historical background"-- So at a risk of repeating myself thought I'd send it along."

NOTE: The photography event took place in 1916 or 1917, and the move from Tennessee to Mississippi took place in 1921. Headley was probably born in the 1860's or 1870's.
