This means I haven't completed all my footnoting nor completely switched to that style, nor have I had a chance to analyze all that I have and match all of it up. You may find a marraige record in my "Unlinked Section" yet find that name attached to a family. If you have any questions please ask and I will clarify for you. I notice that the footnoting symbols did not make the cut and paste...I have included the footnotes below the dashed line although you have no references to match them up. Again, just ask. I try to be very carful to verify my conclusions on any fact with solid logic and hard data so if you see something you know as a fact and I annotate it in my notes as unproven or in question, I may be unaware of a document or other means that proved it at this time. I am sending you this file in sections so expect multiple emailings from me today.

The following is my best effort to date to sort out Vickers lines and annotate reference data from and relating to Wilkes County, North Carolina. Additionally, I welcome any Vickers data for any line and location as I continue to compile and relate other lines. Please feel free to correspond, I am in the military and subject to frequent deployments, I will respond as soon as possible.

There is no evidence yet, other than circumstance, location and dates, that ELIAS VICKERS may be the progenitor of all the VICKERS lines radiating from Wilkes County, NC. That piece said, I challenge all VICKERS researchers to help me substantiate or disprove the following theory as you read the data beginning in section 1. Suppose that ELIAS was born as early as 1735, and removed from Prince William County, VA sometime after daughter (FRANCIS?) FANNY was born in 1757 and son ELIJAH was born in 1759, to North Carolina. After staying several years at a time in Chatham and Rowan Counties, he settled in what was then called Surry and soon became known as Wilkes County. Suppose after FANNY (1757) and ELIJAH (1759) were born, he also had ELIAS (1760), JOHN (1762), and SILUS (1766). I’m only supposing all this right now…I need some help to prove it.

NOTE 1: Please see record for Elijah VICKERS (Family 3.) below, as in his revolutionary war pension deposition he claims he departed Prince William County, VA with his father at the age of six (ca 1765) and eventually settled in Wilkes Co. NC. There is evidence of an Elias Vickers in Prince William County, VA for the correct time period. One Elias Vickers, possibly the father or an elder relation to Elias of Wilkes County, recorded a will on page 60 of the Stafford County (Prince William County formed from here in 1731) Will book K, in 1723. He is listed in the Stafford County census for 1723 and this Elias Vickers died in 1730. Another reference, and this very likely to Elias of Wilkes, is of "George Calvert vs. Elias Vickers, Prince William County, 1753."

NOTE 2: Of general interest, from 1751-1754, Vickers’ orphans are listed three times in the Prince William County census with name spellings of Viciers and Vicaus.

Fanny d. 5 Dec 1848 leaving two children, Nancy Vickers (note 5, the wife of Charles Vickers) (as Written) and Susannah Parker, both of Wilkes Co. (This information from GENEALOGICAL ABSTRACTS OF REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSIONS, ref'd in Elijah VICKERS section)

Nancy may have been a "mountain medicine woman" as indicated in the following statement found Wilkes County Court Case 7769 (Gilreath vs Gilreath): 20 July 1853 (Nancy Vickers) "Says she is now 58 or 59 and knew Alexander Gilreath ever since she can remember. She lived within 1 mile of him. She stated she attended one of his black women who was sick in 1846, and she was there frequently during the sickness of his wife." Possible children:

NOTE 2: James SMOOT is listed in Capt. Nat'l Gordon's District with one White Male over 21 yrs and two White Females in his household in the 1787 Census. This is the same district as Elijah below.
NOTE 3: 26 Jan 1792 and 7 February 1793 James SMOOT is among those listed for road duty in Wilkes County Court Minutes. Both entries are same for Elijah below.
NOTE 4: James SMOOT also applied for and received a land grant of 240.00 acres in 1793/22 Aug 1795. Additional Smoot Surnames are listed in the 1800's, possibly children or relations of James. 5. JOHN VICKERS FAMILY

5. JOHN VICKERS, b. ca. 1762 m. 16 Dec 1784 to Anne IRWIN (IRWIN/ERVIN) in Rowan Co. NC. John was a Revolutionary Soldier entering service ca. 1779 from Wilkes Co. NC and seeing action first at the siege and surrender of Charleston and then at the battle of Kings Mountain under Capt. Senior. He discharged to Rowan Co. NC ca. 1787 and removed to Rutherford Co. NC prior to 1800. Anne was daughter of James and Catherine IRWIN and was born ca. 1763. John had at least one sister, Margaret, living in Rutherford Co. NC ca. 1820. The known children of John and Anne Irwin VICKERS were:

Muster Roll of Capt. Carr’s Company in Rev War- 1778- were Lambert Hopkins, John Autrey - 1^st Lt, Alexander Autrey- Sgt., Jacob Autrey, and William Hopkins.

**Connection- The Autreys were sons of Cornelius Autrey - b 1720 Ireland and married into family of John and Mary Vickers of Edgecombe Co. Some of the Hopkins family, Wake Co. NC, married into the Strickland family also.
