Wright Family - Connections to the Rileys and Vickers - Northern Neck VA

**Richard Wright of Prince William Co. VA and descendants - died 1765

**From information posted by Robert Grant- 2005- who has done extensive research on this family.

**Richard Wright may have been a descendant of immigrant Richard Whittington Wright - b 1633 in Yorkshire England who died 1663 at Chicacoan leaving a will dated Aug 16, 1663 and proven by Dec 16, 1663, in Northumberland Co. VA, and wife Anne Mottrom, who was also born in England in 1639 and died 1713 in Westmoreland Co. VA. He was the son of Francis Wright and Anne Merriton of London, England. This Richard immigrated to the Colonies in 1655 and was a Merchant- (Northumberland Co. Record Bk. 1652-1658- p 145 and Tyler’s Quarterly 1 p 127)- He returned to England and then came back to the Colonies in 1657- and became administrator of Col. Mottrom’s estate. His brother in-law was Col. Nicholas Spencer and together they obtained a grant of land for 1100 acres land in Piscataway on the Potomac River in 1661- They were neighbors to the Washington family who lived at Mt. Vernon. In 1658 he acquired a patent for 2200 acres land also on the Potomac between Lower Machodoc, River and Nomini Bay- which later came to be the home of his son Francis.  He left his wife Anne one half of his land at Machodoc and Potomac Rivers, being the half that adjoined that of Nicholas Spencer with reversions at her death to Francis Wright- and other child,  Mottrom Wright to whom he left land on Elk Run in Maryland  and  daughter Frances. He also mentioned his cousin Matthew Merriton of London as overseer of his interests in England.

Anne Mottrom Wright remarried to David Fox, father of Hannah Fox who had married to her brother John Mottrom - and he died by 1669—at which time she again remarried to Col. St. Leger Codd- who died in Cecil Co. Maryland.

** Westmoreland County was formed from Northumberland in 1653 and Stafford Co. from Westmoreland. Anne was the daughter of Col. John Mottrom and wife Lucy.

**Col. John Mottrom and wife Lucy?- Married before 1639. (Court record). Col. John Mottrom was one of the first settlers of Northumberland Co. formerly called Chickacoan - the Indian District of Northern Neck - between the Rappahannock and the Potomac Rivers. Westmoreland, Richmond and Lancaster Cos were formed from it in 1664- His other daughter Frances may have married John Lewis who came to America in 1650?   (The Lewis family is my ancestors--Lucy)

Col. Mottrom settled here about 1640, coming from York County but prior to that from Maryland. He patented the estate there on 19 Oct 1653 and had patented a tract on the Pyankatank River on 20 July 1642... Col. Mottrom was a staunch Protestant and a Cavalier. His settlement became the headquarters for disaffected St. Mary's Maryland Protestants. He was a justice, holding court at Coan Hall. When the territory of Chickawane became the County of Northumberland, Coan Hall was the County Seat...Col. Mottrom built the first wharf and warehouse and his son-in-law, Richard Wright, completed the brew house he had planned. Col. Mottrom died in 1655 at the age of 45. (Eubank)...He had three children by his first wife, name unknown: Anne who married Richard Wright, John who became a Captain and Justice and sheriff of Northumberland County and Frances, born at Coan Hall in 1645, at age 17 married Col. Nicholas Spencer. He may have been either her first or second husband?
